Reflections from the Sudan Business English & Employability Skills Program
Over the past six weeks, Dr. Patricia Wouters, owner of North Shore English, had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Sudan Business English & Employability Skills Program through collaboration between the Government of Sudan and the U.S. Department of State Virtual Educator Program.
What made this experience especially meaningful was the global nature of the classroom. Sudanese professionals joined sessions from across the world — including Sudan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Uganda, the UAE, and beyond — all coming together with a shared goal of improving their English communication skills, professional confidence, and international career opportunities.
The course focused on practical Business English and workplace communication skills needed for today’s global workforce. Topics included:
workplace communication
teamwork and collaboration
meetings and professional etiquette
networking and employability skills
presentation skills
resume/CV and cover letter writing
interview preparation
leadership and professional communication
Participants represented a wide range of professional backgrounds, including engineers, lawyers, doctors, educators, humanitarian workers, analysts, finance professionals, university students, and emerging leaders.
Throughout the course, students demonstrated remarkable resilience, commitment, and professionalism. Many participants balanced demanding work schedules, family responsibilities, relocations, unstable conditions, and time zone differences while continuing to attend class, participate actively, complete assignments, and support one another.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the experience was witnessing the dramatic growth in student confidence. Students who initially hesitated to speak publicly in English gradually became more comfortable presenting professionally, participating in discussions, leading conversations, and expressing themselves with greater clarity and confidence.
The classroom quickly became more than simply an online course. It became a supportive learning community.
Students encouraged one another through challenges, celebrated achievements together, and built meaningful professional connections. During the program, we celebrated career milestones, graduate school acceptances, new job opportunities, and even the joyful birth of twins for one student’s family — reminding us that virtual classrooms can foster genuine human connection across borders.
The impact of the program was measurable:
5 students received job interviews
2 students earned graduate-level acceptance
1 student received a new international job offer
16 students increased their reading levels
Beyond these measurable outcomes, students became stronger communicators, more confident presenters, better collaborators, and more prepared professionals for international workplaces and opportunities.
Student feedback consistently emphasized increased speaking confidence, improved workplace communication skills, stronger professional writing abilities, and greater confidence participating in professional environments. Many participants expressed interest in continuing advanced courses, mentorship opportunities, and ongoing professional English development.
This experience reinforced the power of education, virtual exchange, and professional English training to create opportunity, confidence, and global connection. It was truly an honor for North Shore English to be part of this journey and to work alongside such talented and motivated professionals.
We are deeply grateful to every student for their positivity, resilience, professionalism, and trust throughout this experience.
We look forward to seeing all that they accomplish in the future.
